A week ago, I set up a contest for my Loyal Blog Readers to suggest a title for Cathi’s novel, which she’s been working on for about five years. That contest is now closed and Cathi has named a winner.
Here’s what Cathi sent me in an email:
And the winner is:
David BenedictDavid’s suggested title was:
Dark HeritageCongratulations David!
I chose Davidโs title because putting the words โDarkโ and โHeritageโ together bestย sums up the whole of the logline and has real potential as a title,ย especiallyย for the second book.ย Theย Black Dark is the name of a place,ย but the word โBlackโ does not necessarily refer to a color andย โDarkโย does not have to mean the absence of light. The word “Dark” in Dark Heritage is a bit curious. I like that โ I don’t want my story or my title toย be predictable.ย I want to thank Randy for his time and help by posting this contest, and everyone for their creative entries and well wishes. It has been a fun week! -Cathi
Randy sez: Yes, congratulations, David! Thanks to all my Loyal Blog Readers for pitching in to help Cathi get unstuck on this title thing. I know we all had fun, and there were a very large number of strong entries.
David, please email me at your convenience with the first five pages of your novel and I’ll critique it as soon as I’m able.
Tomorrow, I’ll resume answering questions submitted by my Loyal Blog Readers about all aspects of fiction. See you then!

Congratulations, Cathi, on finally getting a title. ๐
I know it can be frustrating to be stuck on something while you’re trying to just keep writing.

Wow! I’m astounded, but really pleased, to have won. Cathi, I’m glad you liked the idea– I probably came up with that set of words because I really enjoy digging into genealogy. Of course, I know you may or may not use that title in the end, but I’m honored that you chose it.
And, Randy, I will get my pages to you within the next few days. I’m eager to see how you respond to them, because I know I “break rules” in my writing. My WIP is a historical novel and I’m guessing the scenes play out a little differently than in a typical contemporary or futuristic story. Anyway, I’m looking forward to your critique. I’ve followed your helpful blog, magazine and other articles for several years and have read several of your novels.
Once again, wow! And thanks Cathi and Randy.

David – Good luck with your critique. If you don’t mind sharing, feel free to e-mail me or leave a post on my blog afterwards, I’d love to hear about all the treat advice Randy gives you! (And I’m going to use your title, but for the second book – it’s perfect!)
