Nice entry. I’ve been wondering about those things. Chip MacGregor over at http://chipmacgregor.typepad.com/main/2009/03/ebooks-and-erights.html suggests that Sony’s e-reader will win out if Amazon tries to do the greedy thing and make their software and content proprietary. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

This definitely looks like it’s not a flash in the pan. I won’t be purchasing one for over $300, but I’m not exactly opposed to the concept itself, provided print sticks around.

Thanks for the Kindle review. It’s still a little pricey for me.

I can’t remember where I read it, but one of the blogs to which I subscribe did a feature-by-feature comparison of the Kindle and the Sony E-book about a week or so ago.

If I can find it in my masses of email, I’ll post the link.

I have the first Kindle and love it. I’m not sure if I have all of the ‘extras’ that the second Kindle has, though.

One drawback for me is that I live in Montana where Sprint fears to tread and so, I have to go online to get my book. This isn’t so bad because I like to read the reviews of books before I buy.

I do wish that I could’ve waited because it seems that the newest Kindle is thiner and is easier to hold. I have to be careful not to grasp the page forward button on mine.

Great review, Randy. Very helpful. I’m not so much into the Kindle yet….and I say yet. I’ll stick to “real” books, but it sounds awesome for people in your situation.

I’ve heard a lot of agents and editors are completely sold on it. I can see why!

Thanks for the clear, concise review of the Kindle. It answered a lot of questions for me.
Now, if I can only figure out a way to change the desire to purchase a Kindle from a want to a need.

Thanks for the review! You’ve almost sold me on it. I would also want one for reading other author’s unpublished manuscripts. I have a couple of questions, if you have time to address them.

1) Can you make annotations that are tied to specific text on a page?

2) Can you export annotations? Or do you have to manually get those annotations back to the author?

Are Kindles going to end up a necessity, like computers?

PCs were once a luxury, but that has drastically changed. Now anyone who doesn’t own at least one computer is living in the dark ages. I showed a non-computing friend today how google maps can take you to the actual street view of the address and she about had a heart attack. She said it was all so magical.

Thanks for the review, Randy. It answered enough of my questions and doubts that I was nearly convinced to take the plunge, and went to Amazon.com on a small exploratory trip… and guess what? You can’t have Kindle (and its services) outside the US!
They hope it make it available abroad ‘in te future’, but for now I have to be content with the knowledge that ‘Amazon values its international customers’.
I’m disillusioned.

They don’t sell the Kindle in Europe. Amazon.co.uk sell Kindle cables, Kindle batteries, Kindle covers, Kindle lights… but not the Kindle itself.

On the other hand the Sony reader is available. Given that the EU is a bigger market than the USA, I think all the best content will go to Sony.

Husband bought me a Kindle for Mother’s Day. To eliminate the weight of all the books I travel with.
It is easier to read (when traveling) than the books. I still like paper and ink when not traveling. =)
