I enjoy reading all these comments but as I have noted earlier, I believe that it is much easier to submit a manuscript directly to a publisher here in South Africa.

Elizabeth, this has been my favorite blog for the past 11 months and 15 days so .... you are in good company. :-)

Thanks, Randy! This is helpful information as I try to make a final-final decision about the fall ACFW conference.

If finances were not an issue, I would be there, but with that and not having my manuscript polished past draft #1, it makes me hesitate.

This at least encourages me to look more at the finances than my manuscript, as it sounds like I could pitch even if it is not 100% there yet.

Thanks Randy and Merideth. You are trying to calm our fears.

I hate to see anyone give up going to ACFW Conference just because they aren't ready to pitch. I know going to that particular conference last year helped me grow as a writer.

That's "what". I suspect typos don't impress them.

Thanks Meredith and Randy. As I'm writing my first novel I wouldn't DARE try and 'pitch' it to a publisher - just in case he or she were mad enough to offer me publication and even an advance! What a nightmare! I'm sure I'd be so terrified by a deadline that I'd freeze up on the writing. I recall that Julia Cameron in 'The Artist's Way' advises that it's best for the 'fledgling' (my word) to finish the writing first, because it's where the writer learns his or her craft and also proves to him/herself that he/she can actually complete the project. I speak only for myself here, of course and the restrictions placed on me by my somewhat impaired psychology!
