Merry Christmas Randy, Susan and all of my fellow bloggers!

Looking forward to having you all back on my computer in the New Year. I have loved having you visit my desk, and I've learned so much from each of you. Special thanks to Randy and Susan for sharing your wisdom and knowledge. You are awesome.

Please take care of yourselves over the holidays so that we can learn from, and encourage each other again in 2008. May God bless you all!

My almost 15-year-old-daughter is my self-appointed accountability partner. Really. She bugs me EVERYDAY, "have you written anymore on Fairyeater, mom?"

Even though I've told her I was taking some time off for Christmas, she has asked me twice, "you ARE going to starting writing the second book in January, right, mom?"

I wish everyone a blessed and happy Christmas.
Oh Come, oh come, Emmanuel!

I've used yWriter and can second that it's one amazing little program. For the outliners here, it's gold. I took a very complex storyline and broke it down on the main window into chapters and scenes, each showing POV and what stage of draft it was in. I could click, and in a moment take a glance at and edit without page-scrolling. It also had little windows to keep track of my characters and locations, it could print an outline just from my scene descriptions, and the storyboard was nice.

Alas, I've learned I'm not an outliner, and I'm back to distraction-free word processing. But if you're a spreadsheet person, you'll love yWriter. If you're not--hey, it might work for you, it might not!

Only bad thing I found was that in the editing window, there was no Undo button. This is bad bad bad for me--so I would draft in another freebie, Rough Draft (a search will find that one) then paste into yWriter.

Amazing the tools you can find on the net!

Great series of posts, Susan and Randy. I've devoured every word, and plan to put your suggestions into practice in 2008.

I wish you both a blessed Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Hello everyone,
This is my very first time to blog! Wow! What an adventure for an old lady!
Special thanks to Susan for The Pact idea, and for the plotting blog. I plan to use both. I've had a children's (9-12's) novel hanging around my neck since 1988!! I've decided that, after the holidays, I will finish it with speed, so Susan's encouragement has been heart-warming and timely for me. Thank you, Susan.
We thank Randy almost every day for his encouragement. I appreciate your website, Randy, and all your good tips.
May you have a wonderful Christmas. May Christ's birth be more meaningful to you this year than ever before. His peace is the only solution for our troubled world.

                  Holiday blessings,

                  Sylvia

I especially appreciate the tips on motivating those around you to be on your team. My writing is a point of contention with my husband who doesn't even like to read (dyslexia) and has not read any of my published work. My kids with disabilities don't even begin to understand why Mom is on the computer sometimes. SO. . .I am going to spend the holidays dreaming up some "rewards" for my family if they keep me accountable. It was one of my burning questions.

I am so excited about this new information. I am praying God's blessings on Susan for sharing so freely!

Merry Christmas, Susan and family!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all who frequent here!

Thank you Randy for all that you share with us in helping our writing endeavors. And a big thank you to Susan for your tips and sharing your writing life with us! I know there are many things covered that has hit home in my mind and I plan to use them to the best of my ability. I'm not an 'outliner' either but the way you explain it is something my story really needs, which I've been realizing more and more as my characters show me their tale.

Again, thank you and Merry Christmas!

Thanks so much for the Christmas gift, Susan and Randy. And that's what it feels like...a valuable gift with nothing given in exchange.

Well, like the little drummer boy, I have no gold to offer, but what I have to offer in return is the gift to "play my drum", the best I can. When I think of God giving me a 'gift', I forget that the gift is not addressed to me, but rather; it is given to me in order to give it to God.

So, thank you. May we put this gift to work, practice and learn to 'play' our best for the Lord.

God's greatest blessings to all as we remember the coming of our Savior and King!! Merry Christmas All!!

Thanks, Randy & Susan for all of the advice. As always, any time I spend reading your blog enriches me as a writer. Every morning I wake up and find a new entry is like getting a gift.

Randy or anyone else who reads this blog...

Was wondering if anyone had used the Writing software "Power Writer" and if the snowflake method can be shoe-horned in. At the moment I use a pile of various spread-sheets, but it would be nice to have an integrated package, plus PW looks fairly simple (I am running through the 20 use demo) and not too expensive at $99 or there-abouts. I looked at Dramatica and thought "Sheesh, I think I would have to give up writing before attempting that behemoth!"

Thanks!

That's why I participate in National Novel Writing Month. 50,000 words in 30 days. There's something invigorating knowing that 100,000 other people around the world are shooting for the same goal - and all of us commiserating as we type our fingers off.
